We are delighted to have published a new resource for children with epilepsy who are preparing for EEGs.

This new resource has been written by media volunteer Paula McCulloch – who is mother of epilepsy warrior Leo. Earlier this year, leaning on her experience as Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist - and experiences with Leo - Paula developed a story for children preparing for sleep-deprived EEGs. This led to the publication of Leo and the Brain Signal Quest

In feedback received from both parents and Healthcare Professionals alike, it was noted how a similar resource for awake EEGs would also be useful for children with epilepsy – so Paula developed Sam and the Brain Wave Adventure.

The story follows Sam and her trusty companion Pip as they navigate the high seas to learn more about her brain waves. As with Leo and the Brain Signal Quest, Paula and Leo decided to donate this story to Epilepsy Ireland. We were delighted to work with Paula and Leo to produce this story, and we are delighted to say that Sam and the Brain Wave Adventure has now been published in the lead up to National Epilepsy Week 2026.

We would like to thank Leo and Paula for their efforts in producing this resource which we hope will help many children with epilepsy preparing for EEGs. A huge thank you also to Philip Elliott for masterfully illustrating the story and for bringing Sam to Life.

You can download this new book at the end of this article or should you wish to request a physical copy, please submit your request via the ‘Contact Us’ form on our website.

Thank you once again to Paula and Leo for producing this story which we hope will be of benefit to many children with epilepsy across Ireland.
