We are delighted to be benefiting from the third book of budding Kildare author Roisin Coyne!
Roisin published her first book while still in secondary school, and through each of her publications, has chosen to support a charity close to her heart – with €500 from the sales of each of her books going towards her chosen charity.
Roisin’s latest release – the Golden Child – follows her previous books, The Fifth Element and The Mystery Behind the Bookshelf. However, her latest release has a special connection to Epilepsy Ireland.
As a person living with epilepsy – and a service-user of Epilepsy Ireland – Roisin has decided that a €500 donation from the sales of her book will go towards supporting our work.
Following Roisin’s diagnosis of epilepsy, her mother Anne and Roisin herself have lent on the support services of Epilepsy Ireland provided by our Community Resource Officers & Youth Resource Officer. You can read more about these services by visiting the ‘Our Local Services’ section of our website.
Speaking about when she was first diagnosed with epilepsy, Roisin said:
“When I developed Epilepsy, I was sleeping in my bed not knowing what was about to happen next.
“I was an ordinary seventeen-year-old girl living with autism, going on eighteen when I had my first seizure. I lay there not knowing I had developed epilepsy or that I had a seizure. The only clues that something new and unfamiliar had happened was the blood on my lips and the bite mark in my mouth.
“In the hospital I was sitting on my bed thinking I would never achieve my dreams of becoming an Author, but little did I know, that was just my fear talking.
“When I was told I had epilepsy, yes, I may have been afraid of it at first but that was because at the time I didn’t know what It meant. But over time I have gotten used to it, because now I’m twenty-one and achieving my dreams.”
We are delighted to share that after a long journey, with many hospital admissions and prolonged seizures over the subsequent years following her diagnosis, that Roisin recently became one-year seizure free, and we hope this continues to be her experience going forward.
We would like to thank Roisin for her support for the work of Epilepsy Ireland through her latest book, and we look forward to following her career into the future!
