Epilepsy Ireland shortlisted for Dublin Airport Charity of the Year – we need YOUR help!

We are delighted to have been recently shortlisted as a candidate for the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) Charity of the year for 2024 – but now we need YOUR help!

As we have now made the shortlist, it is up to the staff of the DAA to chose the charity that is selected – so if you work in the DAA, please give us your vital vote. Equally, if you know anyone working in DAA, please ask them to consider voting for Epilepsy Ireland.

We are an organisation that is depended upon by people with epilepsy and their families across Ireland – with approximately 20,000 contacts with our service each year. A partnership with DAA in 2024 would have a transformative impact on our work towards a society where no person's life is limited by epilepsy.

We have been shortlisted as charity of the year, thanks to Peter Ellis (pictured) – an employee of DAA who is living with epilepsy and who canvassed colleagues for support in order for Epilepsy Ireland to make the shortlist.  Peter has shared his experience of Epilepsy Ireland in order to drum up support in this crucial vote. You can read what Peter had to say below:

I nominated Epilepsy Ireland because this is a charity that is very personal to me: I was treated for epileptic seizures for many years from age 3 to age 18. It ended after I had a very successful operation which stopped me from taking any more seizures.

Through all the years of being treated for epilepsy, Epilepsy Ireland were there to support myself and my family when we needed them. They helped by providing information and education to my family on how to deal with the seizures and what to do while I was taking a seizure. They also helped me by giving me support in how to tell people and educate people such as school friends and teachers about my seizures and what to do during a seizure.

Every year about 2,000 people, from children to older people and all ages in between, are diagnosed with epilepsy. Their first port of call is Epilepsy Ireland where they can get support just like me and my family did when we needed it.

Choosing Epilepsy Ireland for Charity of the Year will ensure they can continue their work providing support, information, and advice services; improving public understanding and awareness of epilepsy; advocating for the rights of people with epilepsy; providing training and education services; and supporting research into the causes of, cures for, and management of epilepsy and the social and psychological effects of the condition.

We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to Peter for helping get us to the shortlisting stage. It is greatly appreciated.

Once again, if you work for the DAA, we would appeal for your support as part of the voting process and if you know someone working within the DAA, please do bring this article to their attention!
