FutureNeuro granted €3.9mill funding for BESTS project

Last Updated:

Epilepsy Ireland would like to congratulate our colleagues in FutureNeuro after it was confirmed that €3.9mill has been awarded for their Blockchain & AI-Enabled Stratified Trial System (BESTS) project.

Funding was granted under the Disruptive Technology Innovation Fund (DTIF) which is run by the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation.

The project will allow researchers to develop a system that can identify and match patients to clinical trials based on their personal health data. Furthermore, BESTS will allow the patient partaking in the trial to remain in complete control and ownership of their data and share in any value derived from the results generated from their data.

In short, the patient can determine what part of their personal health data can be accessed and by whom and in return for access, they could potentially use this as payment for future healthcare services.

The project will be led by FutureNeuro but will also see collaboration with the RCSI, Ergo, Microsoft and Singularity Alpha.

On the award of funding, Project lead Professor Gianpiero Cavalleri commented, “in an era of increasing privacy concerns, I’m really excited by the potential of this DTIF platform to empower the individual in controlling their health data and engaging more actively in clinical research and trials”.

More information on the project can be found by visiting the FutureNeuro website. We look forward to hearing more on this project as it develops and would once again like to congratulate our colleagues in FutureNeuro on the approval of this funding – which is a further acknowledgment of the leading research that takes place in the Centre.
