Speaker: Dr. John Lynch, Consultant Neurologist

Dr John Lynch was recently appointed to the post of consultant neurologist in University College Hospital Galway. He has a specialist interest in epilepsy and is currently developing an epilepsy clinic in the hospital. Having graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in 1998, he completed the Irish Specialist Registrar training programme in neurology and worked as a clinical research fellow in the Department of Clinical and Experimental Epilepsy and Department of Molecular Neuroscience at the Institute of Neurology, UCL, London. He has published peer reviewed papers and book chapters on the pharmacogenetics of anti-epileptic drugs, and population genetic studies in epilepsy predisposition. He was a consultant neurologist at the Royal Free Hospital, London before returning to Galway in 2010.

12.00pm-12.45pm: "Epilepsy Research in Ireland update"

Speaker: Dr Gianpiero Cavalleri

Dr. Cavalleri is a Biomedical Research Lecturer in Epilepsy Genetics and Pharmacogenetics at the Royal College of Surgeons (RCSI). The main focus of Dr. Cavalleri's research is on understanding how genes are involved in the development and treatment of epilepsy. Brainwave is currently funding Dr. Cavalleri's 3-year study exploring the role of genetics in patients' responses to epilepsy treatments.

Speaker: Dr. Teresa Burke

Dr. Burke is a Senior Lecturer in Neuropsychology at the School of Psychology at UCD. Her main research interests are the effects of neurological conditions and chronic illness on cognitive functioning. Brainwave is currently funding Dr. Burke's 18-month study looking at cognitive function in individuals with temporal lobe epilepsy and their unaffected siblings.
