Congratulations to the Cork University Hospital epilepsy team on taking one of the top honours at the annual HSE Health Excellence Awards this week.

The Community Epilepsy Outreach Service led by Dr Danny Costello and Dr Ronan McGinty won the prestigious Popular Choice Award for providing a high-quality specialist epilepsy care service to people with an intellectual disability and living in residential care.

The innovative service was established two years ago and sees the team visit clients in their homes and also provide ongoing telephone-based care in between visit. The service currently visits 10 different residential and has assessed more than 200 clients. It means that there is less need for clients to attend hospital while the phone service allows clients to seek advice if they were experiencing difficulties such as medication side effects.

Epilepsy is more prevalent in people with moderate or severe intellectual disability and many epilepsy patients living in residential settings have traditionally had difficulty accessing hospital-based outpatient services.

The HSE said of the project: "The main goals of the project were to improve seizure control, reduce the burden of seizure-related injuries and deaths, reduce the adverse side-effects from medication, cut hospital admissions and improve the involvement of clients, carers and families in the management of epilepsy."
