At long last another Neurologist is about to be appointed for the HSE Southern region. This position was approved for Cork University Hospital (CUH) more than two years ago but, in common with three other posts in Beaumont, Drogheda and Galway, it has been allowed to remain unfilled even though CUH services the largest population area in the country covering not only the South but also parts of the South East and Mid Western areas too. A huge burden has fallen on the existing adult Neurologists there but especially Dr. Brian Sweeney as the only epilepsy specialist there.

Happily, Dr. Daniel J. Costelloe's imminent appointment should improve things. Dr. Costelloe qualified as a doctor at UCC in Cork in 1996 and then took up several residencies in the Neurology departments of other Irish hospitals in order to qualify as a specialist neurologist. He was appointed to a consultant neurologist position at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Boston General, as it is known, is one of the most prestigious hospitals in the USA with a major reputation in all areas of neurology. Dr. Dan Costelloe has built up a very good reputation while he has been there and last year was awarded a 'Patients Choice' rating by a leading health website. He has been associated with the Epilepsy Foundation which is the American equivalent of Brainwave. He has published quite extensively in a number of specialised areas of the epilepsies while he has been in the USA and will, we hope, be able to continue his research when he returns to Ireland.

All of us at Brainwave warmly welcome Dr.Daniel Costelloe's appointment and look forward to him taking up his position in Cork in the very near future.
