October 23rd is International SUDEP Awareness Day. SUDEP Awareness Day was created by UK charity SUDEP Action and is dedicated to raising awareness of SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy) all around the world.

SUDEP is when a person with epilepsy dies suddenly and prematurely and no other cause of death is found. In the general population of people living with epilepsy the risk is 1:1000. There are an estimated 40 cases of SUDEP each year in Ireland.

The day is aimed at:

  • encouraging people with epilepsy to learn about SUDEP and their individual risk
  • focusing on ways people can manage their epilepsy in order to manage their risk
  • highlighting the need for more research into SUDEP which could help save lives
  • raising awareness of SUDEP amongst the general public
  • commemorating the lives of all those who have died from the condition

Key messages for the day are:

  • SUDEP is linked to seizures; better control is the best way of reducing your risk
  • There are things you can do to reduce your risk of SUDEP such as:
    - Taking your medication regularly and reliably.
    - Speak to your doctor before making any changes to your medication.
    - Make sure you have regular reviews.
    - Discuss any lifestyle changes such as having a baby or going to university with your doctor.
    - Avoid excess alcohol consumption and using recreational drugs
    - Tell your doctor if your seizures have changed.
    - If your medication isn't working, don't settle for continued seizures. Ask your doctor what other options there might be
  • The risk of SUDEP varies from person to person.
  • Not everyone with epilepsy is at risk, it is important you discuss your risk with your health professionals.
