'12-10-2016| Budget 2017: Main points for disability, health and special needs education' image

In light of yesterday's budget here are the main points for disability, health and special needs education. 

Social welfare payments

  • There will be a €5 increase in all weekly social welfare payments
  • The Christmas bonus will be increased to 85% of the payment
  • Carers allowance will be paid for 12 weeks after the caree has gone into permanent residential care (from January 2017)

Health 

  • Medical cards for all children on Domiciliary Care Allowance
  • Home Carers Tax Credit increased by € 100 to €1100
  • Reduction in prescription charges for over 70's from €25 to € 20 per month from 1st March
  • €15m will be allocated to the National Treatment Purchase Fund to reduce waiting lists
  • €10m for homecare packages and home helps
  • 1000 new nurse and midwife posts
  • €18.5 m to support the development of primary care services

 Disability

  • There will be funding for approximately 9000 more home adaptation grants
  • €2m is provided for projects for pre-activation supports for people with disabilities

 Special Education Needs

  • €86m provided to extend the ECCE scheme for free pre-school and the roll out of the Access and Inclusion Model (AIM) to enable children with disabilities access the scheme.
  • 900 more resource teacher
  • 115 more Special Needs Assistants (SNA's)
