The First Assembly

Promoting human rights and responsibilities

International Arena, Athlone Institute of Technology

13th June 2015 - 11am to 4.30pm

This unique Assembly, organised by Áiseanna Tacaíochta (ÁT),
invites people from across the disability sector to journey consciously in both a personal and public manner to a gathering point of minds and common purpose.

The Assembly – the first of a trilogy, taking place every two years - will meet to reflect openly on the extent to which our human rights are understood and might be acted upon in ways that are liberating.

At its core, the Assembly aims to stimulate and inspire a culture of inquiry and affirmation for those concerned with developing a more open and inclusive civil society.

The day is designed to include both big-picture and challenging inputs from human rights activists, and an equally powerful set of personal testaments from people with disabilities - describing the struggle involved in authenticating life experience, finding a voice and developing the confidence necessary to lead out on progressive concepts of change.

As such, the Assembly will also provide a large-scale, social environment in which to celebrate and ritualise the significant strengths and capacity of those in attendance and be a benchmark for future Assemblies and related actions.

So, come join the Assembly in a spirit of openness and generosity towards yourself and others; witness the power of community; enjoy the opportunity to be creative in a public arena; and, remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
