In just 6 weeks time, Simon Hutchinson from Bailieborough, Co Cavan will depart on a 18,000 miles round the word race against the clock in an effort to break the Guinness world record for the fastest Circumnavigation of the Globe by Bicycle.

Simon is the only Irish competitor in the World Cycle Racing Grand Tour event and is using the event to raise funds for our work here at Brainwave.

As part of the fundraising effort, a massive cycling challenge is being held at Mondello Park on January 21st.

What is the Modello Cycle Challenge?

Over 250 cyclists will come together to pedal around the 3.5 km track for up to 6 hours and clock up 18,000 miles collectively.

18,000 miles or 28,968.192 km (to be exact) is the distance Simon will cycle during The World Cycle Race in February. The aim is to cover the full round the world distance in just one day. Covering that distance in one place by so many riders in Ireland has never been attempted before. Our challenge will be trying to be the first!

Please note this is not a race. Cyclists of all levels are invited to take part and there will be 2 lanes on the track to facilitate faster and more leisurely riders.

How many laps will you need to cover?

Taking an average cyclist who can cycle for 16 miles per hour, in 6 hours you can cover 96 miles. If we have 250 people who cover the same distance that will be 24,000 miles! We only need to cover 18,000 miles leaving 250 cyclists with a very manageable 72 miles to cover altogether or 33/34 laps! Apart from asking everyone to ride as safely as possible we make no demands on how fast or slow anyone wishes to go.

How do I sign up?

You can find out more and sign up at Simon's Epic Cycle website at:

http://www.simonsepiccycle.com/events/

Entries will also be accepted on the day of the event.

Each cyclist is asked to raise or donate €100 to take part in this event. All funds raised go to Brainwave. Sponsorship cards are available from Brainwave buy emailing fundraising@epilepsy.ie with your name, address, a contact number and the number of cards needed.
