Brainwave - The Irish Epilepsy Association will be holding a briefing today Thursday 22nd November on the Health (Pricing & Supply of Medical Goods Bill) 2012 for all members of the Oireachtas at Leinster House from 1pm - 2pm.

The briefing will highlight the serious concerns the entire Epilepsy community in Ireland (including people with epilepsy, their families and all healthcare professionals who care for and treat people with epilepsy) has regarding the proposed legislation.

  • Prof. Norman Delanty, Consultant Neurologist & Epileptologist; Director of Epilepsy Programme, Beaumont Hospital; President of the Irish Epilepsy League
  • Mr Mike Glynn, CEO Brainwave, The Irish Epilepsy Association; President International Bureau for Epilepsy
  • Ms Cathy Grieve, journalist, person with epilepsy and epilepsy advocate

The concerns are centred on the Bill's failure to exempt Anti-Epileptic Drugs (AEDs) from the new system of generic substitution as recommended in the Moran Report (2010) and as is standard practice internationally. This unacceptable omission could have catastrophic consequences for many of the 37,000+ people with epilepsy across the country and their families who will face a new, totally unnecessary burden in addition to all the existing challenges they already face if this Bill is passed as it currently stands.

Please attend today's session for just 30 minutes and find out how the health and wellbeing of people with epilepsy can be protected by our legislature at this important time.

We look forward to seeing you tomorrow.
